When we play the guitar, and/or any instrument that demands repetition and precision, we put our bodies under stresses that can cause all sorts of aches and pains that can, in extreme cases, cause RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), Carpel Tunnel and Ganglion Cysts.
Please visit the NHS Direct website for more information about these conditions.
We are taught early on in school to warm up before taking part in any physical activity, like, say; running, or a gym class. So why not do so when we begin practicing or performing our instrument?
These four physical warm up exercises are simple and easy to remember. Try them out!
Exercise #1
Hand Star Jumps
Spread your fingers and thumb in a star shape, nice and wide and then release.
Repeat 5 times on each hand.
Exercise #2
Rolling Your Wrists
Roll your wrists clockwise and anticlockwise.
Repeat 5 times on each wrist.
Exercise #3
Stretching your Tendons and Forearm
Place one hand over the other and gently push down on to your fingertips, hold for 5 seconds and release.
Repeat 5 times on each hand.
Exercise #4
Stretching Fingers and Thumbs
Place two fingers on to your thumb and gently push down, hold for 5 seconds and release.
Repeat this for each finger. Repeat 5 times on each hand.
Remember
Shake out your hands between each exercise and if any aches and pains persist please contact your doctor immediately. Please note: I am not a qualified doctor and these exercises have not been recommended by a doctor.
