It has been a little over a month since Walk Off The Earth first uploaded their 5-on-1-guitar cover of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. The video became a runaway internet viral success and has nearly 50,000,000 views to date. Check it out:

The original song was written by Wouter “Wally” De Backer, stage name Gotye, which is pronounced ”go-tea-yay”, and is found on his third album ‘Making Mirrors’ released in 2011.

The video for ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, which was first uploaded to YouTube in July 2011, now has over 65,000,000 views, and with the wonder of YouTube statistics it is evident that the Walk Off The Earth cover version has helped to boost views in the last month or so.
Yesterday an amusing parody of the cover version surfaced on YouTube, uploaded as part of the The Key of Awesome series, a musical comedy show spoofing celebrities, pop-culture and the latest internet memes. In under 24-hours the video has amassed some 45,000 views. Proof enough, then, that to have a hit viral video you need to at least upload a parody spoof video of a cover version of an original song.
