Upon hearing the sad news that the former NASA astronaut, and first man to walk on the Moon, Neil Armstrong had passed away, I wanted to compile my Top 5 songs with “Moon” in the title.
Please feel free to share your song suggestions in the comments.
Moondance – Van Morrison
The song was recorded in 1969 and was the title track of the album ‘Moondance’, released in 1970, but was not released as a single until 1977 some seven years later.
Man on the Moon – REM
The second single from the bands 16 million selling album ‘Automatic for the People’, released in 1992, and reached the UK Top 20.
Walking on the Moon – The Police
A UK number 1 hit for The Police in 1979 from the album ‘Reggatta de Blanc’, which also contained the bands first number 1 single ‘Message in a Bottle’.
Dancing in the Moonlight – Thin Lizzy
Not to be mistaken for the King Harvest, and later a hit for UK band Toploader, track of the same name, this was a Top 20 single for Thin Lizzy in 1977 from the album ‘Bad Reputation’.
Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival
The 1969 single reached #1 in the UK singles chart and can be found on the album ‘Green River’.
Rest In Peace, Neil.

Fly me to the Moon?
Great choice but I wanted to list some of the less obvious tracks!
Marian Call’s “Good Morning Moon” is my favorite, by far. And was actually written for NASA astronauts, so it’s particularly fitting.
John Stewart “Armstrong”
David Pack “Reachin’ Up To The Moon”
Eric Brace “Tranquility Base”
Gretchen Peters “Idlewild”

Texan Singer-Songwriter Nanci Griffith also covered “Armstrong” on her 2001 album CLOCK WITHOUT HANDS . In the credits Nanci writes: “To John Stewart, no one writes a better song than you do. Thanks for teaching me how to take them for a walk”
Moonlight Drive by The Doors!
