All tracks were recorded at The Farm Studios in Surrey, home of Genesis and resident producer Nick Davis (Genesis, XTC, Phil Collins, Deep Purple, Bjork), over the course of September-November 2011.

Performing on the tracks were Noam Lederman (Corrine Bailey Rae, Artful Dodger) and Jason Bowld (Pitchshirter, BMFV, Killing Joke, Fightstar) on drums, Henry Thomas (Paul Weller) on bass, Charlie Griffiths (Haken) and Stuart Ryan (Guitar Techniques, Total Guitar and Guitarist magazines) on guitars.

A collection of video trailers have appeared on Van Halen’s YouTube Channel featuring the band rehearsing on stage. Specific dates for this tour are still yet to be announced, but the first round of tickets will go on sale January 10th.

Along with the announcement of their upcoming tour, Van Halen recently signed with Interscope Records and will reportedly release a new album in 2012. This highly anticipated new release will mark the band’s first album with Roth since 1983′s 1984.

The current Van Halen lineup will see David Lee Roth joining forces with founding members Eddie and Alex Van Halen, and Eddie’s 20-year son Wolfgang Van Halen, who replaced longtime bassist Michael Anthony who left to form Chickenfoot with former Van Halen singer Sammy Hager and virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani back in 2006.

The critically acclaimed guitarist posted on MySpace (20/12/11) that the gear was stolen from the band’s van in Rome on the afternoon of 17 December. Unfortunately, the Italian police were unable to do anything to help, so the guitarists only option was to turn to his legion of fans on the internet to help track down the lost gear.

There is a full list of stolen gear on Guthrie’s MySpace, some of which was rented gear that Guthrie and his band are now obliged to replace. Also stolen was the only copy of the group’s pro-shot footage of a recent show that was intended for a live DVD due for release in 2012.

If you see any of this equipment surface in gear shops around Europe, or on the internet, let Guthrie know via his MySpace, or report it to your local authority. Check out the list and keep your eyes peeled:

Girl (In The Purple Dress)

Everybody Knows

In October 2011 YouTuber klootme uploaded two tracks, “Girl (In the Purple Dress)” and “Everybody Knows” and also explained origins of the demo tracks:

“History behind the tape is that my husband was at school with the band and partied with them (before Jonny joined them!). Phil was at Uni with us both in Liverpool. The demo was given to my husband at 17 in school. We used to go and see them play in Oxford and was friends with them. They were fairly inactive from 1987 -1990 as a band. But when everyone had finished Uni they got back together and tried to make a go of it.”

I personally love these rare tracks and you can really hear elements of both early Radiohead (Pablo Honey) and later Radiohead. It’s great to hear Thom Yorke’s young voice and some interesting saxophone solos!

This video was recorded back in 1989, long before the likes of Andy McKee and Co were idolised over in bedrooms of young acoustic guitarists around the world. You can hear the tape hiss from the video transfer. Enjoy his fantastic playing!

Nirvana’s classic grunge anthem, first released in 1991, reaching #7 in the UK charts, is currently the second favourite for the lucrative Christmas #1 spot, and if you’re wondering why, that’s because of the organizers of this year’s ‘Nirvana For Christmas No.1‘ Facebook campaign.

The online protest was set up in response to The X Factor allegedly stealing the name of the Brighton based charity Rhythmix for the girl group currently in the show. A charity spokesman for Rhythmix said: “The X Factor are refusing to back down,“. “We believe it would be simple and appropriate for them to change the name. We see no reason why they shouldn’t. ‘But now we’re involved in a costly legal debate which takes valuable funds away from delivering services to young people.” He added “We’re at a loss as to why anyone would even consider trying to find a legal loophole to ensure a band can continue to use the name of a small yet highly-respected charity.” (source: MusicNews)

Over the past year Dario had been adding to his treasure trove of amazing lesson resources and back in March 2011 launched his own YouTube channel: DarioCorteseSongs.

Dario’s most recent installment in this country guitar series is the amazing ‘Jerry’s Breakdown’ which can be found on the album ‘Me and Chet’ released in 1972. This track is not for the faint hearted and contains a lot of notes. Dario does a fantastic job of explaining all the parts, including both Jerry on classical guitar and Chet on the electric.
