Cheltenham Guitar Festival 2011 ~ 23 July – 5 August

Celebrate Europe’s number 1 summer school for guitar, drums and voice at the stunning University of Gloucestershire Park campus, located in the centre of the beautiful spa town of Cheltenham.

Blues Academy ~ 23 – 29 July

IGF welcomes, all the way from the USA, the amazing ‘blues Yoda’, Matt Smith. Working with Matt will be IGF favourite Denny Ilett. The blues academy takes students on a musical journey from the Texas deserts via the swamps of Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta up to Memphis and Chicago, Illinois.

Mojo ~ 23 – 29 July

This exciting musical mystery tour will cover a range of rock, pop and blues music from the last 50 years. From classic early rock’n’ roll to modern rock and pop classics. Improve your jamming skills and gain the necessary knowledge and confidence needed to be able to pick up the guitar and play a classic song anytime and anywhere.

During the workshops students will form an extended band and be joined by the IGF house rhythm section. Players are coached in how to faithfully decipher a classic track, replicate the style and techniques implicit to the original and are then encouraged to inject their own personality into performing the piece.

The set list will focus on music from major recording artists such as Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, David Bowie, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and also some more recent releases. http://igf.org.uk

Acoustic Echoes ~ 23 – 29 July

Just want to strum? This fun but intensive course will focus on the acoustic guitar as an accompaniment to the voice, looking at artists as diverse as Jeff Buckley, John Martyn and The Beatles, to popular contemporary artists such as Bon Iver, KT Tunstall, José González, David Gray and Fleet Foxes. We will look at strumming, rhythm, muting and finger picking as we prepare for the student concert at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to bring either their own work or covers they would like to be looked at in class. http://igf.org.uk

Jazz and Beyond ~ 23 – 29 July

Jazz and beyond is aimed at musicians wanting to explore cutting edge jazz techniques extending the fretboard into fusion and jazz-rock. Students will focus on advanced harmonic voicing, extended scales and modes, picking exercises and left hand legato. The set list includes music by John Scofield, Jeff Beck, Scott Henderson and Ralph Towner. Students will be expected to be of an advanced level or seriously quick to learn! http://igf.org.uk

High Voltage Rock Academy ~ 30 July – 5 Aug

Fingerstyle ~ 30 July – 5 Aug

Making his IGF debut as host of the fingerstyle week is the exceptionally talented Rodney Branigan. Rodney, is one of the rising stars of the scene and is sure to amaze students with his unique style. Joining Rodney is fingerstyle sensation Andy McKee. Funk and Beyond ~ 30 July ~ 5 Aug

Funk and Beyond is the UK’s only serious course for groove based music. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the role of guitar and bass in styles as wide as funk, soul, rock, jazz and fusion. Not only will you learn numerous iconic song parts but lessons are linked with the drummers on the rhythm course, working together in groups to put theory and technique into practice. http://igf.org.uk

RhythmFest 2011 ~ 30 July – 5 Aug

Rhythmfest is entering its 11th year as one of the top drumming summer schools in Europe, made unique by it’s integration with guitar, bass and vocal schools. This means that attendees are surrounded by a variety of music all week, not just drums!

The course follows an intense, yet enjoyable, structure of workshops, group lessons, masterclasses from top international drummers, jam sessions, one-to-one tuition and gigs.
