Stage collapses in Ottawa, Indiana, Pukkelpop – Questions?

Sudden and dramatic changes in weather conditions, notably high wind speeds of up to 70mph, have caused three major disasters at music festivals across the USA and Europe in the last 30-days.

Many questions will be raised about the safety of music festivals in general and there will debate as to who is held accountable for these horrific accidents.

The bigger question I ask is whether music festivals have actually become too large, requiring larger stages and rigging, and therefore increasing the chances of accidents like stage collapses occurring. Would it then be less likely to happen if a festival’s attendance was capped reducing the necessity for larger stages and instead using a smaller stage that is less likely to suffer structural failure in adverse weather conditions.
