Can Nirvana beat X Factor to Christmas #1?

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have given Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ 4/1 odds of claiming the coveted UK Christmas #1 spot. Topping the list of Christmas #1 contenders this year include: X Factor’s Amelia Lily (7/2), Cast of The Only Way Is Essex (14/1) and JLS (20/1). Nirvana’s classic grunge anthem, first released in 1991, reaching #7 in the UK charts, is currently the second favourite for the lucrative Christmas #1 spot, and if you’re wondering why, that’s because of the organizers of this year’s ‘Nirvana For Christmas No.1‘ Facebook campaign.

The online protest was set up in response to The X Factor allegedly stealing the name of the Brighton based charity Rhythmix for the girl group currently in the show. A charity spokesman for Rhythmix said: “The X Factor are refusing to back down,“. “We believe it would be simple and appropriate for them to change the name. We see no reason why they shouldn’t. ‘But now we’re involved in a costly legal debate which takes valuable funds away from delivering services to young people.” He added “We’re at a loss as to why anyone would even consider trying to find a legal loophole to ensure a band can continue to use the name of a small yet highly-respected charity.” (source: MusicNews)
